An SMS seal (or joint ring) is a specialized hygienic gasket used within SMS 1145 unions. Unlike the O-rings used in RJT fittings, SMS seals typically feature a distinct L-shape (lipped) or square-section profile, designed to create a flush, crevice-free internal connection.
Seal Profiles
L-Section (L-Style): The most common profile. The "lip" sits inside the joint to ensure the internal bore remains smooth and free of product traps, making it ideal for Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems.
Square Section: A standard flat-faced gasket used in some SMS union configurations.
Material Options
The choice of elastomer depends on the temperature and chemical nature of the process fluid:
EPDM: The industry standard. Excellent for hot water and steam (up to +150°C) and highly resistant to CIP chemicals.
Nitrile (NBR): Best for fats, oils, and general dairy applications where high heat isn't a primary factor.
Viton™ (FKM): High-temperature and chemical resistance for aggressive media.
PTFE: Offers near-total chemical inertness, though it is less flexible than rubber elastomers.
