COACH BOLTS

Coach Bolts (Carriage Bolts or Cup Square Hex)

  • Design: Feature a distinctive shallow, domed (mushroom) head with a square section underneath.
  • Installation: Require a pre-drilled pilot hole and are secured with a nut and washer on the other side. The square part of the head bites into the timber to prevent the bolt from spinning when the nut is tightened.
  • Function: Primarily used for robust, structural timber-to-timber or metal-to-wood connections where high clamping force is needed and access is limited to one side. They offer high resistance and the head provides a smooth finish for safety and aesthetics.
  • Strength: Generally provide greater holding strength than coach screws because they are secured with a nut, spreading the load over a larger surface area.
