Dome nuts (also known as acorn nuts or cap nuts) are hexagonal fasteners with a closed, rounded top.
They are primarily used for three reasons: to provide a clean, finished appearance, to protect personnel from sharp thread ends, and to shield internal threads from corrosion and dirt.
Material Choices & Environments
Material selection for dome nuts is typically driven by the exposure environment and aesthetic requirements rather than structural load.
- Stainless Steel: The most popular choice for visible and outdoor applications due to its aesthetic appeal and corrosion resistance.
- A2 (Grade 304): A general-purpose grade suitable for most outdoor settings and food processing.
- A4 (Grade 316): Known as Marine Grade, it contains molybdenum for high resistance to saltwater and chemicals.
- Carbon/Mild Steel: A cost-effective choice for indoor, dry environments.
- Bright Zinc Plated (BZP): Provides a basic level of protection and a shiny finish.
- Galvanised: Offers better corrosion resistance than BZP for sheltered outdoor use but is not suitable for marine environments.
Brass: Used primarily for aesthetics, thermal/electrical conductivity, or non-sparking requirements. It offers a luxurious golden finish that naturally resists corrosion.
