What is a Gate Valve?
A gate valve is a linear-motion valve used to completely start or stop the flow of a fluid. It operates by introducing a flat, wedge-like barrier (the "gate") into the pathway of the media.
When it comes to achieving a reliable, leak-proof shut-off, gate valves are the industry standard.
When you turn the manual handwheel, the stem moves the internal gate up or down perpendicular to the flow.
Important Note: Gate valves are all-or-nothing devices.
They are designed strictly for complete isolation and are not suitable for throttling or regulating flow. Leaving a gate valve partially open exposes it to high-velocity fluid friction, causing rapid wear, severe vibrations, and seat erosion.
Material Selection: Choosing the Right Match
Choosing the correct material ensures your valve survives mechanical stress and fluid chemistry:
| Material | Best Used For | Key Advantages |
| Brass / Bronze | Residential plumbing, HVAC, and light-commercial water networks. | Highly corrosion resistant, cost-effective for standard settings. |
| Cast / Ductile Iron | Municipal water mains, wastewater processing, and massive distribution lines. | Remarkable mechanical strength; ideal for handling high physical stress. |
| Stainless Steel | Chemical manufacturing, food and beverage processing, and marine environments. | Exceptional resistance to severe chemical corrosion and extreme temperatures. |
