HARDENED WASHERS

Through-hardened washers are high-strength fasteners heat-treated uniformly throughout their entire cross-section.

They feature a standard surface hardness of 37–45 HRC (Rockwell C) and a minimum core hardness of 30 HRC.

These components distribute intense clamping loads over a wider area, preventing softer joint materials from compressing or galling.

They are critical for preserving bolt preload tension in high-stress structural joints.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Manufacturing Method: Quenched and tempered. This ensures consistent mechanical properties from the outer surface to the core.
  • Dimensions: Generally thicker and smaller in outside diameter than standard utility washers to handle intense local pressures.
  • Common Standards: Manufactured to strict engineering tolerances, including:
    • BS EN 14399-6: European specification for high-strength structural bolting assemblies.
    • DIN 6916 / DIN 6340: Heavy-duty and high-strength friction grip standards.

Primary Engineering Applications

  • High-Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) Joints: Paired with heavy hex structural bolts (e.g., Grade 8, Grade 10.9, or Grade 12.9) in steel bridges, buildings, and heavy transport infrastructure.

Preventing Preload Loss: Eliminates "material embedding," where the bolt head slowly sinks into the clamped assembly and compromises joint tension over time.
