STAINLESS STEEL 304

Stainless steel 304 is a versatile and durable choice, valued for its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

It is the most common and cost-effective grade of austenitic stainless steel, suitable for a wide range of applications, especially those not involving high chloride exposure.

Properties and composition

  • Composition: Contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with some variations for specific purposes.
  • Corrosion resistance: Offers good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, water, and many chemicals, but it is susceptible to pitting in high-chloride environments. For coastal or saltwater applications, grade 316 stainless steel is superior due to the addition of molybdenum.
  • Heat resistance: Performs well in both high and low-temperature environments.
  • Weldability and formability: Excellent for welding and forming into complex shapes, making it a versatile material for fabrication.
  • Hygiene: Easy to clean and sterilize, making it ideal for the medical and food industries.

Common applications

  • Food and beverage: Widely used in food handling and processing equipment, sinks, tanks, and sanitary ware due to its hygienic properties.
  • Chemical and industrial processing: Used in chemical plants and industrial settings for piping and equipment that transport various liquids and chemicals.
