CARBON STEEL

Carbon steel plate flanges are commonly manufactured from S235JR to meet standards like EN1092-1.

The specific material grade and standard are selected based on pressure rating, temperature service, fluid type, and flange size requirements.

Material Grades

S235JR

Description: A low-carbon, mild structural steel suitable for manufacturing flanges for low-pressure applications.
Key Characteristic: Flanges made from S235JR are known for good weldability, toughness, and machinability, but have limited corrosion resistance and are not suitable for high-temperature service.

Based on the European standard EN 10025, S235JR has the following characteristics:

Yield Strength: Has a minimum yield strength of 235 megapascals (MPa).
Impact Resistance: The "JR" designation means the steel has passed a Charpy V-notch impact test, absorbing at least 27 joules (J) of energy at room temperature (20°C).
Weldability: Due to its low carbon content, S235JR has good weldability and can be safely and easily welded using standard techniques.
Corrosion Resistance: It has poor natural corrosion resistance and requires a protective coating, such as galvanization, for use in outdoor or humid environments.
Chemical Composition: Its chemical composition is designed for good strength and processing behaviour. Key elemental percentages are:

Carbon (C): ≤0.17% (for thickness ≤40mm)
Manganese (Mn): ≤1.40%
Phosphorus (P): ≤0.035%
Sulfur (S): ≤0.035%
