Steel hexagon full nuts are the most widely used mating fasteners for bolts and threaded rods in industrial and construction assemblies.

They are primarily defined by the DIN 934 (now largely replaced by ISO 4032) standard, which specifies their height and width across flats. 

Strength Classes & Materials

Steel nuts are categorized into property classes that indicate their maximum tensile strength and the grade of bolt they should be paired with. 

  • Class 8: The most common standard for general-purpose metric bolts (like property class 8.8).
  • Class 10: High-tensile nuts intended for use with 10.9 and 12.9 fasteners, providing higher load-bearing capacity.
  • High Tensile (Class 12): Used in critical structural applications where extreme strength is required. 

Common Finishes

  • Bright Zinc Plated (BZP): A thin layer of zinc that protects against rust in dry, indoor environments.
  • Self-Colour: Uncoated mild steel with a light oil film. It is cost-effective but will rust if exposed to moisture, making it best for internal use or parts that will be painted.
  • Hot Dip Galvanised: Coated in molten zinc for a much thicker, more durable protective layer suitable for permanent outdoor use.
